As we approach September, many of us think about the beginning of a new school year. Holy Family Hospital of Bethlehem is a teaching hospital, training 225 nurses and midwives and 13 medical residents annually.
In response to the deepening crisis in the Bethlehem area, Michele Bowe, President of Holy Family Hospital of Bethlehem Foundation has announced a matching grant of $100,000. Donate before September 15th and your donation will be doubled.

Here is a message from Michele:

Holy Family Hospital Foundation is committed to providing holistic healthcare — caring for body, mind and soul. To ensure healthier babies and safer deliveries, we launched a poverty alleviation program in partnership with St. Catherine’s Parish that provides grocery, electricity and pharmaceutical cards to Christian families in need. Bethlehem is at a point of inflection which will determine its future as a mosaic society, with a thriving Christian community alongside the Muslim community. Providing a bridge to carry these families over to the resumption of pilgrimages ensures that like Woujoud, they will stay firmly planted in the land where Jesus was born.

During my recent trip to the Hospital, I walked into the Well Baby Nursery one morning. The joy of new life and relief permeated the air in what feels like a world away from the wartime conditions, just 1,500 steps from the manger of the Christ Child. Here, 220 Palestinian Christians and Muslims work seamlessly, championing life and hope daily. Together with residents and nurse trainees, they deliver up to a dozen or more babies each day. What could be a more tangible sign of hope and trust in the future?

One very special delivery stood out that day. It was not a newborn baby, but an ancient olive tree, Woujoud, estimated to be about 2000 years old. Woujoud is a name meaning ever-existing, and she now graces the circular garden bed in front of the Hospital. Olive trees are a symbol of life in Bethlehem, and Woujoud stands as an unwavering commitment; we will accompany our patients and staff for generations to come.
